New Games to be played in 2017

Hopefully I will get to play these games I obtained for Christmas in 2017.  Four of these games I have played before but never owned, one is an upgrade/new version of itself, otherwise the others are all new to me.

Tyrants of the Underdark

Star Trek: Five Year Mission

Chariot Race

Eldritch Horror

The Grizzled

Welcome Back to the Dungeon

Valley of the Kings: Afterlife

Citadels

Mystic Vale
BGG Link

So here is hoping that I can get some out of club gaming going.  People from the club who are reading this, don't be shy ask me and I'll organise dates.  Remember I'm the one with the disability.

Cheers

Ageist Discrimination!? 2017 Ramblings and Wot Nots...

Yep, it's me wearing a hat, just a hat given to me by a friend.  I'm an Anglo-Irish/Australian. Is it making a statement, well that's up to you whether you want to be offended by what is just a hat.  A hat just keeps the sun off your head, the words written on the hat are just words.  Words like guns can only harm when wielded by human intent, otherwise they are inert.
2017 has started and I sit here at my keyboard, alone among my many possessions with still so few to share my passions with.  It's frustrating, its debilitating and more than anything else it's depressing.

As I get older my circle of friends of my own age group get smaller.  Those in the younger age groups seem to be reluctant to embrace those who are older or not amongst their initial group of friends.  I have spent hours watching YouTube footage of conventions and it is depressing to see that while it is refreshing to see a resurgence in my hobby, it is not so great to see the discrimination there seems to be between the groups of hobbyists.  This is of course from both camps, those who have been there from the beginning - like myself, and those who have just arrived on the scene.

Recently a new business opened in the city and I saw photos of the events hosted there.  They showed attendees who were all young people (compared to me), dare I use the word - trendy, cafe type, hmmm, perhaps I'm not quite able to find the right word to describe the group.  However what they are is not people over 50, so where have all the gamers gone who were at the cusp of gaming back in the 70's when the revolution started? Has the reality of life truly had such significant changes on their lives that they stopped altogether what they once loved?  Why?  For example a person who loves reading doesn't suddenly stop reading (except for exceptional circumstances), so why would you leave a hobby you love?

I believe that the hobby is a highly social and interactive one, the need to be with people is the key to why being successful in interpersonal relationships is key to long term gaming life.  The majority of people tend to form a gaming circle of anywhere between say 4 to 6 people and that will be the group they will stick with over the lifetime they may have together.  It will shrink eventually to the point where the group will be untenable to function.  The people from this group then have the difficulty of having to find others!  If they have only had their own insular group then attempting to find another group or others can be difficult, finding others whose temperament may fit into the group is another factor.  This is the all defining problems with ageing game groups.

How then do people find new people?  That's the problem?  As an ageist I find it difficult (though not as difficult as those of many my age) to relate to those younger than myself.  Finding others to share my hobby with is a challenge?  Where do you go?  Who is going to accept you?  Who are you going to accept?  The questions are almost limitless...  I really have no definitive answer except patience and the hope that you can find others, and the only way that may occur is through social media and clubs or other such venues that will allow people to network without cost.

A friend of mine once said to me "you have a magnificent collection of games, you can easily host games that people would be willing to play, you could charge a small fee (say $5-$10 a head) to play, have a bar and nibbles canteen, all to fund new games to build a library and continue the cycle".  Sounds wonderful doesn't it?  My answer was "who will come?" and that's that crux, and will come.  I built a magnificent games room and library but it has attracted nothing but jealousy.  People may want to know me in a social context of a club, but once we walk out the door, no one wants to spend the time of day knowing me.  If I pass a person in the street, they will pretend not to know me, sad but true.  So it's a depressing time in life, the older you get, the fewer the opportunities in life you retain and the chances to improve your life reduce accordingly.

So if you are a younger person, remember, you to will be an old person one day.  Take the time to cultivate relations with all age generations, maintain them, enjoy them.  Nursing homes are not the only place that have lonely people.

My goals for 2017 are (in no particular order):

  • Attempt a regular home based gaming group
  • Resume Role Playing
  • Start painting miniatures
  • Try linking with others, push the comfort zone (not really possible but will try)
  • Try living, rather than seeking death

Say what you will...

I like to quote this every so often when people keep trying to apply todays social mores on the past.
“Blasphemer! A crime is a crime! There are moral laws that stand above all human society.”
“Oh, no, there aren’t. That’s just the point where your medieval morality breaks down. All laws and ideas are historical and relative, not absolute. They are relevant to their particular time and place; taken out of context they lose their importance.”

Where to find things?

The title?

Yes - it's meant to draw you in and make you read a little further dear reader... did it work?

Well, what is this bit of blog about?  This one is meant to be a generic source for people who want to know where I go when sourcing reviews or "how to" guides for my varied hobbies.  So sit back and be amazed or appalled at my selection.

1. Shut Up & Sit Down
Why have I chosen these people.  Firstly they are English, and their culture is closet to mine, actually as far as I'm concerned they are mine but my citizenship papers say otherwise... but I digress.  They give in my opinion witty and crass reviews without favour, they will offend.  I will generally pick for example a game given an approved status over one given by say the Dice Tower.

2. The Dice Tower
OK the second place I will look at, and possibly only because it is prolific is the Dice Tower.  Reviews are on the whole never greatly critical..... though they do happen.  It is however decent in that the site does provide a prolific amount of reviews, and play through.  The site is very family or PG orientated so it will appeal to many.  I find it too dry and clinical.

3. Pair of Dice Paradise
Chaz Marler is animated and entertaining.  Well worth watching, his Top 100 list is certainly worth the watch.

4. The Game Boy Geek
Not often looked at these days, very fast spoken.

5. TableTop - Wil Wheaton
Love him or hate him, and the community is divided (especially those who are competitors in this "industry").  Personally he has done much to breath life in making games appeal to the greater public through his work on Geek & Sundry.  It would appear the latest Season will only appear free for the first couple of episodes then be pay to view, however from what I then hear the content will be free to view after a year?  Again, this is only hearsay to me, through what has been bandied round other sites.  Time will tell.
Back on track though the episode and highly entertaining and breath life into games such that it makes you want to go and try them, if not buy them.

6. Board Game Geek
The source for I guess all things related to games?  I use it to record my game collection.  It's great in that it's also a source for rulebooks, expansions, add-ons (fan made), and a plethora of other sources.  Forums, trading options and such.  It's been my go to site when someone comes to the club with an out of print game.

7. Watch It Played
Well produced and instructional.

So there you have it, the above are not exactly in order or priority, well apart from possibly 1 and 2.  I confess that when I jump on the computer each day the first thing I do is see if there is anything new from Shut Up & Sit Down, and sort of suffer a mild case of depression when there isn't.

If you have a favourite site or channel you visit, please share in the comments, I'm always keen to expand my knowledge base.

Things on hold

I haven't posted for a while.
For those that have followed my blog for a while know that I struggle with mental health and I've not been doing well of late.  In August I had a home invasion with the property next door which I was involved with and was threatened by the intruders.  This has not helped, together with other domestic and daily life issues which for me just seem to pile on at the same time.
So I'm taking a break from so many things and looking at why I do what I do?
Why do I collect miniatures, when I haven't painted a figure in months?
Why do I buy board games, when I never have anyone to play them with?
Why do I buy books that I never read?
There was a whole list of why's after the above but it became really whiny and while it seemed therapeutic to me to vent, came across as childish if you the reader read it - so I deleted them.
I still run a facebook group, or more or less it runs itself, I just keep and eye on it.
I still help my local club.
So I'm currently very unhappy, receiving treatment (as usual), and just going to give up the hope of having a gaming life that once got me excited and motivated.  Personally I believe age is an issue now, unless you can keep your own age group of friends, the younger crowd (exclude family) do not seem to be that interested in mixing.  Nursing homes aren't the only places filled with depressed, lonely people.
